Those looking to buy Kratom encounter countless strain names: Bali, Sumatra, Borneo, Maeng Da, plus Red, Green, and White Vein. Much of this is more marketing than truth. We explain what's really behind it.
Where Kratom really comes from
Most of the Kratom traded worldwide does not come from many different islands, but predominantly from the island of Borneo – especially from the cultivation areas along the Kapuas River. Kratom grows naturally there, mainly near the riverbanks and spread over an enormous area, harvested by many small farmers. During one of our stays in Indonesia, a three-hour speedboat ride along the river passed almost continuously by Kratom trees – a good impression of how widely dispersed and how little “plantation-like” the cultivation actually is.
What Red, Green, and White Vein really mean
A common misconception is that the strain is determined by the color of the leaf veins. In fact, almost all Kratom comes from leaves with green or red veins, and the composition of the pure leaves hardly differs between them. White leaf veins are very rare in nature and cultivation. What makes a strain "Red," "Green," or "White" is primarily the processing: harvest time, drying method and duration – and for red strains, fermentation. "Gold" and "Yellow" also result from special processing or mixtures.
And Bali, Sumatra, or Maeng Da?
Origin names like "Bali" or "Sumatra" suggest a specific place of origin – in reality, they are predominantly trade and marketing terms, not documented cultivation locations. "Maeng Da" is not a region, but originally a quality or trade term.
Therefore, we consciously do not present such names as guarantees of origin – we describe our strains as they truly are.
